Is Playwright free to use?

Written by Jatin Thacker, Automation Architect · Updated

Yes, Playwright is free and open source, released under the Apache License 2.0. You can use it for personal and commercial testing without paying for a licence.

The licence is in the LICENSE file at the root of the Playwright repository on GitHub, and it is the Apache License, Version 2.0. The npm packages say the same: both @playwright/test and playwright-core report Apache-2.0 as their licence. The example runs npm view against each package to show it.

Section 2 of the licence grants a "no-charge, royalty-free" licence to reproduce, modify and distribute the work. The conditions apply when you redistribute Playwright itself, for example by giving recipients a copy of the licence; writing and running tests with it is not redistribution. If your company has a policy on open-source licences, the licence name and that GitHub link are what the reviewer will ask for.

What Playwright being free does not cover is where you run it. Running tests on a paid CI service or a cloud machine is a cost of that service, not of Playwright.

For anything legal, read the licence text itself rather than a summary, including this one.

terminal
npm view @playwright/test license npm view playwright-core license

Which licence is Playwright released under, according to its GitHub repository?

AI can write the test now. The job is knowing whether it checks anything. That's what the course teaches, one chapter at a time.
